Native fish in Illinois River found to feast on invasive carp.
Juvenile Silver Carp and Bighead Carp are being eaten by native predatory fish in the Illinois River. Researchers studied the stomach contents of 1,472 fish to see if they were consuming the invasive carp. They found that native fish like White Bass, Black Crappie, and Shortnose Gar were eating the juvenile bigheaded carp, even when other prey was available. This suggests that native predators might help control the population of bigheaded carp in the river.
