Greenhouse Gases Threaten Global Climate, Kyoto Protocol Struggles to Curb Emissions
This article discusses the problem of greenhouse gas emissions and how to reduce them. Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, are mainly produced by human activities and contribute to global climate change. Different methods, such as administrative rules, economic systems, and market approaches, have been used to address this issue. The Kyoto Protocol in 1997 introduced flexible mechanisms like trade of quotas and clean development to help reduce emissions. Despite these efforts, carbon emissions have increased between 2008 and 2012. Currently, the focus is shifting towards regional and national regulations while still maintaining an international framework. The Doha Conference in 2012 further clarified the conditions for building climate policies. The trend now emphasizes regional and national regulation systems while preserving the Kyoto Protocol as a stepping stone towards a new global agreement.
