Occupational licensing widens wage gap for immigrants in the U.S.
Immigrants in the U.S. have different chances of getting job licenses based on their skills and how long they've been in the country. Middle-skilled immigrants are most likely to be licensed. Recent immigrants earn less with a license compared to natives, but this changes over time. English-speaking immigrants with licenses do worse in the job market than natives, while immigrants from Africa and Latin America do better. Middle-skilled immigrants benefit the most from getting licensed, especially recent ones. However, certain licenses like cosmetology may not be a good investment for immigrants.
