District Heating Networks Poised to Outshine Heat Pumps in Environmental Impact
District heating networks in Europe can help reduce carbon emissions by using renewable energy sources and waste heat. A study compared a district heating system in Milan with electric heat pumps for a new building area. Despite higher CO2 emissions, district heating could have similar climate impacts in the future due to renewable integration. In 2030, district heating and heat pumps could have similar climate change impacts. However, district heating showed better overall environmental performance in both scenarios, with a significant reduction in environmental impact compared to heat pumps.
