New bitter gourd traits offer potential for higher yields and nutrition
A study on bitter gourd was conducted to understand the variability and heritability of traits related to yield. Different bitter gourd genotypes were grown in a field experiment, and traits like fruit weight, length, width, and yield were measured. The researchers found that certain traits like fruit yield, fruit size, and vitamin C content were strongly influenced by genetic factors and could be improved through selective breeding. This means that specific characteristics of bitter gourd plants can be enhanced by choosing the right parent plants for breeding.
