Chemical steeping boosts glucose and xylose yields from oil palm trunk.
Chemical steeping was used to improve the extraction of glucose and xylose from oil palm trunk. By treating the trunk with lactic acid and sodium metabisulphite before hydrolysis, the total yield of glucose and xylose increased by up to 28.8% compared to untreated trunk. The best results were achieved at 130°C for 50 minutes with 2% sulphuric acid. This method successfully breaks down the lignocellulose in the trunk, making it easier to extract the sugars.
