Global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, threatening climate goals.
The article presents a new dataset on greenhouse gas emissions from 1970 to 2018, with an extension to 2019. The researchers compiled information on CO2, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases emissions globally, by country and sector. They used various models and data sources to estimate emissions and assess uncertainties. The study found that global greenhouse gas emissions in 2018 were 58 ± 6.1 GtCO2 eq., with further growth expected in 2019. The analysis showed a consistent increase in emissions over the past five decades.
