May sea temperatures predict Indian monsoon rainfall, impacting agriculture and livelihoods.
The study looked at weather data from the north Indian Ocean to see if it could predict summer rainfall in India. By analyzing sea level pressure and sea surface temperature in May, researchers found that certain patterns can help forecast monsoon rainfall. Low pressure areas in May over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal were linked to lower rainfall in India during the summer. On the other hand, a specific temperature difference in the Arabian Sea in May was connected to higher rainfall in India during the monsoon season. This suggests that monitoring these weather patterns in May could help predict how much rain India will get in the summer.
