Re-using plastic mulch boosts profits and sustainability in farming.
Re-using plastic mulch film for farming is better for the environment and profits than using new film every year. The study compared re-used mulch, new mulch, and no mulch in growing maize and faba beans. New mulch increased crop yield and soil health, but re-used mulch also improved soil moisture and temperature. Re-used mulch had less plastic residue and made more money in the faba bean system. Overall, using re-used mulch for faba beans can reduce plastic waste, maintain high productivity, and increase profits for farmers.
