New cherry tomato hybrids show potential to boost health benefits.
Heterosis breeding was used to improve cherry tomato quality traits in a study. Different cherry tomato crosses were tested for yield and quality traits like ascorbic acid and lycopene content. The crosses Sun Cherry x VRT-02 and WIR-5032 x VRT-02 showed the highest increase in ascorbic acid content, while EC-914092 x EC-914097 and EC-914115 x EC-520078 had the highest lycopene content. These crosses have the potential to be commercially viable replacements for standard checks in further testing.
