Urban expansion in Changchun, China has led to a significant increase in urban heat islands, especially at night. The more densely built-up an area is, the higher the land surface temperature becomes. Rapid urbanization has caused a rise in average temperatures in newly urbanized areas, while existing urban areas have seen a decrease in temperature variation during the day. Nighttime temperatures in newly urbanized areas have become more varied due to urbanization.
