Toxic algae blooms ravage Jakarta's coast, threaten livelihoods and tourism.
Algal blooms in Jakarta Bay have become more severe in recent years, harming marine life and local industries. The increase in blooms is likely due to human activities causing eutrophication, leading to more frequent and intense red tides. Researchers collected samples from 2008 to 2015 and found that phytoplankton abundance ranged from 40.90 x 10^6 to 1699.10 x 10^6 cells.m^-3, with the highest levels in May 2010. The rapid growth of Jakarta city may be contributing to the worsening algal blooms.
