Wheat straw transformed into abundant renewable fuel with breakthrough process.
The researchers found that treating wheat straw with sodium hydroxide before using enzymes can increase the amount of sugar produced. They tested different conditions and found that using 1% sodium hydroxide, 5% wheat straw, and 60 minutes of treatment worked best. They also optimized the enzyme process, finding that using 8% wheat straw, 35 FPU of enzyme per gram of straw, a temperature of 50°C, a pH of 5.3, and 96 hours of processing time resulted in the highest sugar yield. The sugar yield was 60.73%, which is 53.35% higher than untreated wheat straw.
