Perennial rye grain crop in Alberta faces challenges for sustainability.
Perennial rye was studied as a potential grain crop in Alberta, Canada. The researchers compared its performance with fall rye, spring rye, and perennial forage crops over two growing seasons. Perennial rye had lower grain yields compared to other rye types but produced more aboveground biomass. However, after two years, regrowth was minimal due to winter survival and weed competition issues. This suggests that while perennial rye could be a dual-purpose forage-grain crop, long-term cropping beyond two years is currently not feasible in cold temperate conditions.
