Flood-Proof Cities: Low-Impact Development Chains Revolutionize Urban Stormwater Management
Low impact development (LID) techniques are used to manage stormwater in cities. A study in Shenzhen, China looked at how different LID facilities, like bio-retention and rain gardens, can reduce runoff during storms. They found that connecting these facilities in a cascaded pattern is more effective than a parallel pattern. The study also showed that as storms get stronger, the amount of runoff increases. Moving the peak rain intensity to the end of the storm has a small effect on runoff. This research helps us understand how to design LID chains to better manage urban flooding.
