New nitrogen diagnostic tool boosts maize yield predictions and nitrogen management.
The researchers aimed to develop a tool to help farmers manage nitrogen in maize crops for better yields. They studied how nitrogen levels in different parts of the plant relate to grain yield. By analyzing leaf, stem, and plant dry matter, they created curves to show the ideal nitrogen levels for optimal growth. They found that these curves accurately predict the plant's nitrogen needs and can estimate grain yield. The relationship between nitrogen levels and yield was strongest during the V12–VT growth stages. This tool can help farmers adjust nitrogen levels to improve maize yields before the plant flowers.
