Reservoir-like water fluctuations hinder restoration of aquatic vegetation in Chaohu Lake.
Aquatic plants in Chaohu Lake, China, have been damaged by human activities and low water levels. A study found low diversity of plants in the lake, with only a few types surviving. The seeds of aquatic plants are scarce and mainly found near the lake's entrance. Attempts to restore the plants by changing water levels or clarity won't work, but creating a specific restoration area near the entrance could help bring back the plants. Artificially changing the land near the entrance can help seeds from other areas grow there and restore the lake's plant life.
