Agricultural expansion driving biotic homogenization in Mediterranean bird communities.
The study looked at different bird communities in olive groves in Spain to see how they are affected by farming practices and landscape complexity. They found that the variety of bird species increased in more complex landscapes. Changes in bird communities were mainly due to different species moving in and out of sites, rather than changes in the functions they perform. Some sites had unique bird communities, with certain species only found there. The woodchat shrike was identified as an important indicator of biodiversity in these areas. Overall, expanding agriculture is making bird populations more similar, but identifying key species and communities can help manage these landscapes better.
