Global Trade in Services Faces Barriers Despite Tariff Cuts
The article discusses how the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) is similar to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in promoting fair treatment and non-discrimination in international trade. GATS goes further by including commitments on market access. Liberalizing trade in services could lead to significant economic gains, potentially as large as those from liberalizing trade in goods. As services trade grows faster and protection in the goods sector decreases, the benefits of opening up services trade become more important.
