New wheat hybrids promise higher yields and better crop resilience.
Researchers studied how different wheat hybrids perform in terms of yield traits by creating 21 hybrids in a specific pattern. They found that genetic factors not directly inherited from parents played a big role in determining the traits. The best combinations for high grain yield mostly involved pairing high and low performing parents. Only a few combinations with both high performing parents were successful. Based on their effects on grain yield, three specific parents and 14 cross combinations were identified as good for overall yield and specific traits.
