The European monetary union faces challenges in coordinating economic policies among independent states sharing a common currency. The existing economic governance system was insufficient in preventing the sovereign debt crisis in the eurozone. As a response, the EU decided to reform its economic governance framework to address the shortcomings and ensure the sustainability of the single currency.
