New indica rice cultivars with high nitrogen efficiency promise higher yields.
The study looked at different types of indica rice to see how efficiently they use nitrogen to produce grain. They found that rice cultivars with higher nitrogen use efficiency had shorter growth periods and more productive tillers. These cultivars also had higher spikelet density but shorter panicle length. Plant height did not seem to be related to nitrogen use efficiency. Overall, the research suggests that certain indica rice cultivars are better at using nitrogen to produce more grain.
