Boosting nitrogen levels triples sycamore growth without negative effects.
Sycamore seedlings were grown with different amounts of nitrogen to see how they would grow. The ones with the most nitrogen grew the most, but even a little bit of nitrogen helped them grow. Adding nitrogen in the middle of the season made the plants grow faster. The nitrogen didn't make the plants more sensitive to drought or cold. The leaves stored sugars in response to stress. Nitrogen affected the amount of pigments in the leaves and how well the plants could make food. Other nutrients in the leaves were not affected by nitrogen.
