New Model Predicts Bridge Deck Cracking, Extending Lifespan and Safety
Bridge deck cracking can lead to bridge deterioration, especially from deicing salts. A model was created to predict cracking in bridge decks within 180 days of construction. Factors like concrete mix, additives, girder type, construction, and environment were considered. The model showed that using shrinkage-reducing admixtures can significantly reduce or prevent deck cracking by lowering tensile stress. This has been supported by real-world experience in bridge construction.
