The researchers looked into using strong carbon composite materials to make helicopter transmission housings tougher and reduce wear on gears and bearings. They analyzed and built two prototypes using carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite material. These prototypes were tested for stiffness in twisting and pulling at different temperatures. They also tested a magnesium case for comparison.
