Greenhouse gas emissions in Eastern Europe plummet due to economic decline, fossil fuels remain top source.
This study looked at how different countries in Central and Eastern Europe, like Bulgaria and Ukraine, release gases that contribute to global warming. They checked data about carbon dioxide, methane, and other gases from things like burning fossil fuels and managing waste. The researchers compared the emissions from each country based on their population and economy. They found that burning fossil fuels is the biggest source of carbon dioxide, while activities like coal mining and managing livestock produce a lot of methane. Some countries had lower emissions in the past, mainly because their economies slowed down. The study also discovered that the estimates from these countries matched with other global databases for carbon dioxide emissions but varied for other gases coming from different sources.
