New military framework assesses risks of training on natural resources.
The Military Ecological Risk Assessment Framework (MERAF) was developed to help the Department of Defense (DoD) assess the impact of military training and testing on natural resources. It builds upon the EPA's ecological risk assessment framework and is designed to be used alongside existing environmental assessment procedures. MERAF focuses on ecosystem management and is useful for evaluating training and testing areas. It does not cover human health risks or compliance requirements, but can aid in organizing technical analysis for Environmental Impact Statements. MERAF aligns with the National Environmental Policy Act process and does not replace any existing procedures within the DoD.
