Public Support for EU Integration Declines Amid Economic Crisis
The article examines public attitudes towards further European Union integration after two waves of expansion and before the economic crisis of 2008. The researchers used data from the 2008 European Social Survey to analyze individual and contextual factors influencing support for EU unification. They found that euroscepticism is supported by a simple instrumental model, while a model of opportunity costs of sovereignty is not valid. Additionally, institutional trust plays a role in shaping attitudes towards EU integration.
