Global population growth at high levels into 21st century, unless interventions.
Population trends in 1974 showed low mortality and fertility in developed countries, some reductions in fertility in middle-income countries, and high fertility in most developing countries. Population growth is expected to remain high unless factors like famine, war, or disease intervene. Many countries aim to reduce population growth rates, while others want to increase birth rates. Family planning programs are supported by over half of the world's nations. Aid for population programs has increased, but actual progress is slow. New measures are needed to address population pressure and accelerate fertility changes predicted for the rest of the century.
