New Study Reveals Impact of Land Use on Soil Erosion in Europe
Land use and management affect soil erosion rates. A new method was developed to estimate the impact of cover and management practices on soil loss in the EU. By analyzing data on crops, conservation tillage, and vegetation cover, researchers found that forests have the lowest soil erosion risk, while arable lands and sparsely vegetated areas have the highest. Conservation practices like reduced tillage and cover crops can reduce soil erosion by 19.1% in arable lands. This method can help policymakers predict how changes in land use and farming practices will affect soil erosion in the future.
