Late-planted maize boosts annual yields by 40% in double cropping system.
Maize grown later in the year for double cropping with winter barley showed decreased growth and yield compared to maize planted in April. However, total grain yields per year increased with double cropping. Late-planted maize had lower forage and grain yields, but the reduction in yield was less for the ear than the stalk. The location with the highest grain yield had the least reduction in yield from late planting. Harvesting conditions for double-cropped maize were better than for conventional maize. More research is needed to improve grain production in double-cropped maize.
