Polluted Reservoirs Threaten Drinking Water for Kunsan Residents
The scientists studied water quality in reservoirs near Kunsan to understand eutrophication, a problem where lakes become too enriched with nutrients. They checked five reservoirs over multiple seasons and found that Okgu and Oknua Reservoirs had poor water quality due to excessive nutrients. Mije Reservoir for recreation was generally good, but sometimes exceeded standards. They discovered strong links between certain water quality factors and detected high eutrophication levels in all reservoirs based on nitrogen and phosphorus. By using different eutrophication indicators, they classified Okgu, Oknua, and Daewi Reservoirs as eutrophic, while Mije and Geumgul Reservoirs were in a less severe state. The study suggests the need for better water quality control in the affected reservoirs to address eutrophication issues effectively.
