Rural areas in the EU are changing and becoming more diverse. Traditional distinctions between urban and rural areas are becoming outdated. By analyzing different types of rural regions, researchers found that central regions are different from more remote areas facing development challenges. Geography strongly influences the economy and demographics of regions. A new index shows the complex geography of rural areas in the EU. National approaches to rural areas need to be replaced with broader strategies that consider different levels of analysis.
