New methods predict stormwater flow in Charlotte, improving flood prevention.
Researchers developed methods to estimate peak discharges and unit hydrographs for streams in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. They used statistical relations based on rainfall and basin characteristics to estimate storm peak discharge, unit-hydrograph peak discharge, and lag time. By analyzing data from 25 streamgaging stations and up to 60 raingages, they created dimensionless unit hydrographs for different sites. These methods can help in watershed modeling and designing stormwater-management structures in the area.
