Detritus and invertebrates dominate Beibu Gulf food web energy flow.
A model was made to study the food web in Beibu Gulf, South China Sea. It showed that benthic invertebrates are important in transferring energy, phytoplankton is a key food source, and marine mammals are at the top of the food chain. The system has six trophic levels with a transfer efficiency of around 16%. The biomass of commercially used species is low compared to the amount of primary production.
