Real-time flood forecasting and gate operation saves Thai city from devastation
The researchers studied flood management in the Ta Tapao River Basin, Thailand. They used a hydrodynamic model and a telemetering system to monitor and regulate flood flow in real-time. By incorporating a Genetic Algorithm model, they optimized flood flow regulators to minimize flood damages. The results showed that the gate operation delayed flood levels in Chumporn City, allowing for flood water storage in the basin. Villagers near the monitoring stations expressed interest in helping maintain the system for future flood events.
