Eco-friendly Fungus Cleans Toxic Dye Wastewater, Revolutionizing Textile Industry
In the study, researchers investigated how a fungus called Coriolus versicolor can be used to remove color from dyes. They found that by using the fungus's laccase enzyme in a cell-free form or when immobilized on the fungus itself, they were able to successfully decolorize certain dyes. The method using immobilized fungus was more effective than the cell-free approach. Different types of dyes were tested, and all showed some degree of color removal using the immobilized fungus method. The researchers also discovered that this process could be done repeatedly with good results, suggesting that this method could help treat dye-contaminated wastewater from industries like printing and dyeing.
