Introducing legumes boosts pasture productivity and soil health dramatically.
Introducing legumes into pasture systems can boost productivity and soil health. A study compared different pasture setups and found that adding legumes alongside grass increased dry-matter and protein yield significantly. Applying nitrogen also helped increase productivity. The land's efficiency and profits improved with legume introduction. While organic carbon content was highest in grass plots, intercropping reduced it slightly. Grass pastures showed the best structural stability. Intercropping also increased mineralizable nitrogen in the soil and enhanced soil microbial activity.
