New research reveals key enzymes in ammonia assimilation for bacteria.
This article discusses how bacteria like Bacillus spp use enzymes to make glutamine and glutamate from ammonia. Different Bacillus groups use different enzymes for this process. Some use glutamine synthetase and GOGAT, others use all three enzymes, and some use only GDH. In B. subtilis, GS and GOGAT work together to assimilate ammonia. GOGAT is responsible for making glutamate from glutamine in B. subtilis.
