Vast peat bog discovered, could impact climate and local communities
The scientists used ground-penetrating radar to study peat deposits in Western Siberia. They used different antennas to measure the depth of the peat and identify different types of peat layers. The surveys showed that the Bakchar bog has a large area where peat is accumulating, extending up to 700 meters from the bog's edge. In drained areas of the Ust-Bakchar bog, there was either no peat accumulation or the existing peat was degrading.
