Mining industry's carbon emissions rise and fall, with output growth driving emissions and energy efficiency reducing them.
The research aimed to understand how energy use in China's mining industry affects carbon emissions. Scientists made a model to estimate the carbon emissions from 2000 to 2020. They looked at factors like how much energy was used, the types of energy, and how efficiently it was used. They found that carbon emissions went up, then down, and then slightly up again. Output value going up made carbon emissions higher, while using energy more efficiently helped reduce them. The way energy is currently used in the mining industry makes it hard to cut carbon emissions.
