Commercial peach orchards recycle nutrients, reducing need for external fertilizers.
The study looked at how nutrients are used and recycled in a peach orchard over 14 years. They found that most of the nutrients in the trees were in the roots and skeleton, with fruits also taking up a lot of nutrients. Nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus were moved into the fruits and storage parts of the tree during the growing season. Overall, the peach trees needed certain amounts of nutrients each year, but more than half of these were recycled within the orchard. This means that with good nutrient management, only a small amount of external fertilizers are needed for the peach trees to grow well.
