The early Slovak dictionaries showed how Slovaks used Czech as their written language. A. Bernolák created a big dictionary with Slovak, Czech, Latin, German, and Hungarian words. Later, Ľ. Štúr focused on the central Slovak dialect in grammars. The first modern Slovak dictionary with lots of examples was made by the Slovak Academy in the late 1900s.
