In an anaerobic digester, there are two important retention times: solids retention time (SRT) and hydraulic retention time (HRT). SRT is how long bacteria stay in the digester, while HRT is how long wastewater or sludge is in it. If the digester has no recycle, SRT and HRT are the same. But if solids are recycled, SRT and HRT can change a lot.
