The aviation industry is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by developing sustainable aviation fuels. These fuels need to meet safety standards and be compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure. While current synthesized aviation fuel components can be blended with traditional fuels, they may not have all the necessary properties. The industry aims to create 100% sustainable aviation fuels that meet both safety and sustainability criteria. Stand-alone complete fuels could be ready within 1-2 years, with blends to follow. Sustainability criteria will be assessed separately from technical performance.
