Construction Emissions Threaten Climate, Concrete and Steel Identified as Top Culprits
Global construction industries contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, with buildings and infrastructure accounting for 39% worldwide. A study analyzed data from 44 countries to pinpoint the key sources of emissions within construction sectors. By examining the greenhouse gas intensity of each country's construction industry, the researchers found big differences, from 0.165 to 2.05 kgCO 2 e/Euro spent. The production of concrete and steel emerges as major contributors to emissions in the most intensive countries. This detailed analysis helps identify where emissions reduction efforts should focus within construction supply chains, paving the way for targeted solutions to cut global construction-related greenhouse gas emissions and enhance environmental sustainability.
