Improving flood control standards in the Huxi sub-basin has reduced flood risk in the Taihu basin. By increasing the flow into the Yangtze River and Lake Taihu, maximum flood levels in HX have decreased. However, this has also raised the risk of flooding in the Wangyu River and Taipu River. When heavy rain hits the northern Taihu basin, the impact of the improved flood control standards in HX is even more significant.
