Urban agriculture and green infrastructure boost ecosystem services in cities.
Urban agriculture and green infrastructure play a crucial role in providing essential services to cities. A review of 157 studies found that green infrastructure alone is better at regulating local climate and air quality, while combining it with urban agriculture is best for biological control and genetic diversity maintenance. Community gardens, green spaces, allotments, and parks are the most effective spaces for diverse service provision. However, some growing spaces have not been studied as much. More research is needed to focus on under-represented services and growing spaces, collect data systematically, and include ecosystem service assessments in wider analyses.
