South Korea's Lack of Ecological Diversity in Protected Areas Revealed
The study compared protected areas in South and North Korea based on international conservation criteria. South Korea has only two types of protected areas, lacking ecological diversity and national parks meeting IUCN criteria. In contrast, North Korea has a more balanced and ecologically representative protected area network, with 9 national parks meeting IUCN and UN standards. Both countries need to improve their protected area systems to include all IUCN categories for better conservation.
