Graphene oxide hinders wheat growth by disrupting nitrogen assimilation process.
Graphene oxide (GO) can harm how wheat plants absorb nitrogen, a crucial nutrient for their growth. By studying wheat roots exposed to 400 mg L-1 GO, researchers found that GO lowers the activity of enzymes involved in nitrogen assimilation, like nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase. This leads to a decrease in nitrogen assimilation products like nitrous nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, and proteins. Overall, GO negatively impacts the way plants take in nitrogen, with nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase being the most affected enzymes.
